We would like to thank Jennifer from Halfway Home Adoptions in Kansas City, MO she was a real big help in Penny's rescue. Thanks Jen!!! Wonderful shelter to work with. We also want to thank Sam with Pilots N Paws for flying Penny to safety. Sam is saving so many urgent animals lives!
Penny came into the care of painfultruth.org on December 6th, 2009. She was flown by Sam with Pilots N Paws to a small town in Iowa to be picked up by us. Her journey started a few days prior when Courtnee told Jen she could come to us for rescue. Jennifer got the ball rolling and got Penny into a safe temporary situation while she was spayed and got all her shots preparing to be transported to us.
Penny came from Kansas City, MO and she is a Pit Bull Mix! Penny is about 8mo old and has plenty of puppy left in her. However, Penny hasn't been allowed to be just that, a puppy. Penny has had a very rough life and her small body tells a story. The entire story on her we will never know we can only go off by what we see physically on her body.
Penny has a scar that runs around her entire neck. It is not worn hair, it is an actual scar where you can tell a collar was either embeded or a cord/rope was allowed to sink into her body. The scar tells an awful story because you can tell this had to be a horrific injury at one point. Penny is only around 30lbs and eight months old so it is obvious whatever was around her neck was just left there to hurt her and no one bothered to correct it. Now with a looser collar on her neck it hides that awful scar from her past. Poor baby.
Pictures below were taken December 6th, 2009 as she was picked up by Courtnee and Wendee. Click on the picture to enlarge them.

Her ears are full of scars from parasites and flies eating at them. Her beautiful coat that is white with brown spots is stained. The stain starts at her neck, runs down the front and all along her back. We can only imagine it was the injury on her neck and filth that caused all this staining on her. Several baths and time should erase this from her wonderful coat. She is very skinny from not enjoying shelter life and we are sure from the level of care she previously had she wasn't fed properly. She has some weight to gain.
Penny is a love bug. What can I say. She loves to cuddle and just wants to be held and loved on by humans. She is a very submissive little thing and will roll over on her back and wants you to pet her belly. If you raise your hand to pet her she will flinch like you are going to beat her so that tells us this dog has suffered beatings. If your voice gets to high she will squirm into you and wag her tail and coward like she has been bad. We are being very careful with our voices and our hand movements. We are not afraid at all of her being aggressive we just don't want to make her uncomfortable. She is trusting but she is in a shell and needs help.
Penny is friendly with other dogs, until, they come into her space. She isn't interested and becomes a bit dog aggressive. She has food aggression with other dogs. She doesn't mind people messing with her food but doesn't want another dog near her food. She is going to have to go to a home where she is the only critter in the house.
Today we are going to go buy her a muzzle so that she can be out in the house more. We need to protect our dog in the house and make sure Penny is safe as well. We have a behaviorlist working with us too in order to help Penny relax some with other dogs. This is something we are not going to completely cure I am sure. However, we want to make her more relaxed to ensure a better future for her. We understand her behavior is part genetics and most of it we believe is fear based and survival mode she is stuck in.
We will update more information on Penny as time goes on. At this time we are thinking of changing her name to Baillee, she was bailed out!

Penny will be formally adopted tonight. She has been with her new family for the last several days and is doing well. The most amazing thing happened. I was on transport to take three dogs to rescue. I had just looked at a sign that said I was in Kansas City, Missouri city limits and I had gotten a text from her new owner with a picture showing Penny all snuggled in a dog bed sleeping, saying she was staying with them. What are the chances? I just happen to hit the very city Penny was rescued from and get that news!
Updates of her new life coming......
